Understanding sports injuries in Suffolk

Don't let your injuries keep you from the sport you love

For those of us who love their sporting activities, getting injured through sport is an occupational hazard, but still annoying.

Whether you're dealing with a strain or sprain, or a more serious condition, injuries can happen in any sporting activity even when careful stretching or warming up is carried out before hand.

Sports injuries can be a major setback, whether it is just affecting your own achievements or whether it's affecting your teammates too.

Medical treatments often focus on rest and pain medication, but this can be emotionally frustrating and cause loss of condition.

Home remedies for sports injuries

Foul

RICE Method
RICE stands for Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation and it's the most common advice given for sports injuries. Unfortunately, science has moved on since the 1960s, when this method was popularised, and both rest and icing are discouraged for most sports injuries as they can slow or disrupt healing.

Gentle Exercise and Stretching
Both stretching and gentle exercise are important before and after strenuous exercise, but they are rarely useful for more severe injuries.

Pain Relief Medications
Whether over the count medication or prescription, pain relief medication can offer temporary relief but don't accelerate healing. Indeed, there is evidence to suggest that some painkillers, specifically anti-inflammatories, can actually slow healing.
