Understanding whiplash

Whiplash: easing neck pain and muscle stiffness

Whiplash is a common injury resulting from rapid back-and-forth movement of the neck, often experienced in car accidents or physical sports.

If you've been involved in a car accident or an injury where you have developed whiplash, it is important to ensure that you haven't also suffered with a concussion injury; this may involve a visit to a medical professional or being checked out at a hospital.

Symptoms of whiplash include neck pain and stiffness, headaches, and dizziness. Whiplash doesn't just involve the neck vertebrae, but often the muscles of the neck and shoulders too, which can tensed in the moment of the injury. This condition can be particularly frustrating for active adults, as it can limit both mobility and daily activities.

Medical treatments often focus on pain relief, which can be a slow and incomplete process.

Rest and Gentle Neck Exercises

Following a whiplash injury, rest is important both for physical pain but also to allow for any mental or emotional recovery if whiplash has been caused by an incident like a fall or car crash.
However, rest and gentle neck exercises won't always alleviate the symptoms of whiplash.

Heat or Cold Therapy
As with many soft tissue injuries, people often turn to icing or heating. Some people choose to use one or the other, while others will use just heat or just ice. For many people, heat will feel much more comforting and restore movement more than icing, but regardless, relief will often only be temporary.

Pain Medication

Using pain medication can help reduce the pain; sometimes prescription medication will be needed if over the counter medication isn't strong enough.
